Mitten Pattern:

Copy-Cat Hat Mitten Pattern (Hopefully…we’ll see how this goes…I hope it doesn’t suck, seriously)

Materials:

Worsted weight yarn

Circular Needle Size 5

Circular Needle Size 7

Guage:

18sts = 4 in. in St st with larger needles

Mittens(make 2 (derp de derp))

Cuff:

With smaller needles cast on 36 sts. Join in round being careful not to twist stitches. Place marker to mark beg of rnd.

Work in 2k, p2 Rib until piece measures 3 in.

Switch to larger needles.  Separate stitches so there are 17 on one needle (top of mitten) and 19 on the other (bottom of mitten).

Round 1: K1, Begin the Eyelet Mock Cable Ribbing, k1, knit in moss stitch for second needle.

(The Moss stitch is not necessary you can knit the palms in St st if you’d like)

Eyelet Mock Cable Ribbing (multiple of 5 sts):

Row 1: *K3, P2* Repeat from * to one sts before end.
Row 2: *K3, P2* Repeat from * to one sts before end.
Row 3: *SL1, K2, PSSO, P2* Repeat from * to one sts before end.
Row 4: *K1, YO, K1, P2* Repeat from * to one sts before end.

Continue to follow Round one until piece measures 3 ½ in. from cast on.

Begin increase for thumb:

Thumb shaping

Rnd 1: K1, work Mock Cable, k1, inc 1 in next st, Moss St to end – 37 sts.

Rnd 2: K1, work Mock Cable, k1, place marker, k3, place marker, Moss St to end.

Rnd 3: K1, work Mock Cable, k1, slip marker, inc 1 in next st, inc 1 in next st, k1, slip marker, Moss St to end – 5 sts between markers.

Rnd 4: Work in Pattern. Knit thumb increases.

Rnd 5: K1, work Mock Cable, K1, slip marker, inc 1 in next st, k to 2 sts before 2nd marker, inc 1 in next st, k1, slip marker, Moss St to end.

Rnd 6: Work in Pattern. Knit thumb increases

Rep last 2 rnds until there are 15 sts between markers.

[ During Thumb shaping continue to work the “k1, Eyelet Mock Cable, k1” on the top needle and the moss stitch on the bottom needle leaving the stitches in between the marker as a plain St st. ]

Next Rnd: K1, work Mock Cable, k1, remove marker, k1, slip next 13 sts to a holder, k1, remove marker, Moss St to end.

Work in pattern on 36 sts until piece measures 10 in. from beg. (Try and stop on Row 4 of Mock Cable Pattern)

Shape Top

Rnd 1: *K4, k2tog; rep from * around – 30 sts.

Rnds 2, 4, 6 and 8: Knit.

Rnd 3: *K3, k2tog; rep from * around – 24 sts.

Rnd 5: *K2, k2tog; rep from * around – 18 sts.

Rnd 7: *K1, k2tog; rep from * around – 12 sts.

Rnd 9: K2tog around – 6 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through rem sts and pull tightly together to secure. Fasten off.

I was unable to write the mock cable throughout the decreases. I hope it looks okay.

Thumb

Pick up stitches from the holder and divide evenly. From right side, join yarn. Pick up and k 3 sts along edge hand, then k rem sts – 16 sts. Place marker for beg of rnd.

Next Rnd: K3tog, k to end of rnd – 14 sts.

Work even in St st until Thumb measures 2 1/4 in.

Next Rnd: *K2tog around – 7 sts.

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through rem sts and pull tightly together to secure. Fasten off.

To do the second glove you will have to do the thumb increase on the opposite side of the first one. Since you are using a non-reversible pattern.

So, hopefully this doesn’t suck and you’ll be able to make an awesome pair of mittens for your mother! :D

I made this pattern for someone on tumblr. Everyone else is welcome to it. I cannot promise that the pattern will work at all. I have not test knitted it and I don’t actually plan to. This was more of a practice thing for me while trying to help someone else. If anyone sees any mistakes or actually does knit them please link/tell me because I would LOVE to see them! (Also I would love to know if my pattern sucks and I should just give up writing them forever)
